WOODLEY United finally recorded their first win of the season with a 4-1 success against Cirencester Town Development in the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup.

The hosts took an early lead when Kai Parton-Edey found the left corner with a low right-footed shot from the right of the box, and the same player almost doubled their advantage while full-back Pele Hagger also had a shot saved.

The Kestrels' early pressure paid dividends on 11 minutes, though, when Parton-Edey got his second from close range after a Jon Malone header had hit the right post.

In his first appearance for Woodley, Pablo Fernandez was running the show in midfield and Chace Jewell forced Cirencester goalkeeper Dan Gough into a good save following a flowing move.

Midway through the half, United could have extended their lead in bizarre circumstances when a massive kick from their debutant ‘keeper Tom Bryant went straight through to Gough, who appeared to carry the ball over his own line. The goal was not given, however.

Gough’s last action before limping off injured was to tip a free-kick round the post before a Fernandez half volley went wide.

However, the hosts did gain a deserved third on the stroke of half-time when Malone headed in a Hagger free kick. They went further in front at the start of the second period with the goal of the game – Teddy Thomas, who was captaining the side, placing an unsaveable shot into the far corner after cutting onto his left foot from the right side of the box.

Woodley had further chances to add to their tally – Parton-Edey unfortunate not to complete his hat-trick – although the final word went to Cirencester, who grabbed a late consolation through substitute Josh Ukoha.

Woodley United travel to Clanfield in the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup on Saturday (3pm), before visiting Thatcham Town Development in the Perpetua Press Floodlit Cup next Tuesday (7.45pm).
