HELLENIC League leaders Ascot United suffered their first home defeat of the season, losing 3-1 to third-placed Brimscombe & Thrupp at the Racecourse ground on Saturday.

Coach Aaron Steadman described it as “not a bad performance” as his side conceded two brilliant goals and another which took a huge deflection.

In-form Brimscombe, who had won five of their previous six games, went ahead after eight minutes when Ollie Pitt’s left-footed shot looped over keeper Lee Allen into the net.

Ascot’s James Haworth had a ‘goal’ ruled out for offside before Sam Blackie doubled his side’s lead with a long-range effort which swerved past Allen and Jack Horrell notched a third with a rasping half-volley with 63 minutes gone.

The Yellaman, who had beaten Virginia Water 1-0 in midweek thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Louis Bouwers, quickly pulled a goal back when Nathan Minhas was fouled by Chris Greenough to earn a penalty which he took himself, his 17th goal of the season.

They nearly scored a second with Jonny Denton seeing his free-kick brilliantly tipped over the bar by keeper Ashley Gale.

United are away to Division One East leaders Thame Rangers in the Bluefin Sports Hellenic League Cup on Saturday.

In Division One of the Combined Counties League, Sandhurst Town had what they admitted was a “bad day at the office”, losing 3-1 at home to Godalming.

They took the lead through Charlie Oakley, only for the visitors to hit back quickly with the equaliser through Kass Kenny.

The Fizzers were unlucky not to have gone back in front, hitting the post and the crossbar in quick succession, before Pat Cox supplied a neat lob to put Godalming ahead and, after having Kenny sent off, they extended their lead with a 25-yard free-kick.

This coming Saturday, Sandhurst travel to Leatherhead to face Kensington Borough Eversley & California fared even worse last weekend, crashing 4-1 at Tooting Bec, having lost 3-1 at Ash United in midweek with Marcus Guest scoring their goal five minutes from time.

They will be looking for an improved performance when they host table-topping Farnham Town this Saturday. The Boars will also have home advantage for their Southern Combination Cup tie against Staines Lammas next Tuesday (7.45pm).
