JOE Grant scored twice as Bracknell Town eased through to the second round of the Bluefin Sports Hellenic League Cup with a comfortable 5-2 win at Burnham on Saturday, writes Dave Wright.

The Robins cruised into a three-goal lead inside the opening 25 minutes.

They went ahead after nine minutes when Adam Cornell set up TJ Bohane, who fired home from near the edge of the penalty area to continue his fine start in his Bracknell career.

Cornell went close with a header before Grant doubled his side’s lead after 18 minutes.

After Grant had missed an open goal following Bohane’s cross, Seb Bowerman took advantage of hesitancy in the home defence to make it 3-0 with less than half-an-hour on the clock.

It was all Bracknell at this stage. They are playing with a lot of confidence following a good run of results, which was in complete contrast to a manager-less Burnham side still without a league point this season.

Three minutes into the second half, Kensley Maloney made it 4-0 and it looked as if the Robins would chalk up a huge score against a side that had conceded 11 goals to Thatcham two weeks ago.

However Luther Blissett, who is in charge of the team following David Tuttle’s departure, must have given his players a stern lecture during the interval as they started to play with a little more determination and fight.

Daniel Watkins, with a low drive around the wall, scored from a free-kick on 51 minutes and five minutes later Danny Wilson notched a second for the home side.

The two goals made Bracknell think it was not going to be the walk-over they had first believed, and they upped the tempo.

They didn’t really look like conceding again and added a fifth themselves through Grant after 75 minutes.

Manager Mark Tallentire saidcommented: “We came here to do a job and we did just that, although we were disappointed to have conceded those two goals. We got a bit sloppy for 10 minutes early in the second half.”

Bracknell make a long trip into the Oxfordshire countryside this Friday (7.30pm kick-off) to play Hellenic League Division One West leaders Hook Norton in the first qualifying round of the FA Vase.

They will be missing full-back John Gray, who starts a three-match suspension.

Robins then face Henley at Bottom Meadow next Tuesday night (7.45pm) in the league.
