The Annual National Short course Masters Swimming Championships are held in Sheffield each October.

And the event is becoming a second home for the Bracknell Masters Swimmers, such has been their success in the competition.

BWSC sent a team of 11 swimmers and coach Jim Dobinson, and they went on to claim medals in the very first of 18 events, continuing all the way to the last.

It began when Dave Davenport (60-64), swam a wonderfully controlled race to become the 1,500m freestyle National Champion.

Davenport pulled away over the final 100m to win by three seconds.

In the same event, Karen Bassett (45-49), who had missed out on a medal in the 2013 event by 0.3 seconds, went one better this time to secure a bronze over the same distance. She repeated her achievement in the 400m individual medley, taking home two bronze medals in all.

In the mens’ 100m freestyle, Adrian Sureshkumar (30-34) matched last year’s time exactly, while Belinda Veasey (25-29) also did the same in the 100m butterfly to secure a silver medal.

Veasey’s second silver medal then came in the 400m individual medley event after a superb swim that saw her miss out on gold by a mere two seconds.

She also teamed up with Amy Vaal, Karen Leftley and Allie Boddington for the 4x200m freestyle relay.

They blitzed their rivals by some distance to win by an incredible 39 seconds to pick up the gold.

The quartet also competed in the 4x100m medley relay where they clinched an impressive bronze.

Leftley, however, narrowly missed out on another bronze in the 50m breaststroke.

Meanwhile, Mike Daniell (70-74) reigned supreme in the mens’ 100m butterfly by taking the gold medal.

Daniell also picked up a silver in the 100m backstroke despite poor vision after losing a contact lens.

And Daniell made it a medal of each colour by also finishing third in the 50m butterfly.

Elsewhere, Sara Lang (30-34) finished eighth in the 100m backstroke and sixth in the 200m backstroke.

Boddington (40-44) swam well and finished a respectable seventh in the 200m backstroke.

In the 800m freestyle Terry Wright (50-54) and Mark Straw (55-59) swam impressive times, but were not in medal contention.

Yet BWSC were not finished there and Vaal (25-29) rounded off an excellent championships by winning the 800m women’s freestyle.

She finished 2.48 seconds ahead of her nearest challenger, an improvement of 12 seconds on her 2013 time, as she completed a wonderful weekend for the club.
