Rob Mitchell and his son, Kieran Houska-Mitchell, 11, came home with a mix of gold, silver and bronze medals from the meeting after performing admirably in every competition.

It was Kieran who delivered the most medals for the duo as he won gold in the boys 11-17 year-old and 9th to 7th Kup Patterns along with joint-bronze in the boys’ heavyweight sparring 9th to 7th Kup.

Rob then won silver in the adults mixed patterns for 8th to 6th Kup, to complete a fantastic weekend for the father and son team, who train at Camberley Taekwon-do.

A group of Pinewood Judo fighters made the long trip to Bradford last week to compete in the Northern Area Open Championships and picked up six medals between them.

Olivia Spellman was the star of the show as she first took gold in the Cadets at U57kg, before securing a very impressive silver in the senior U57kg, only losing the final by a single penalty against a highly ranked GB international fighter.

Kiera Batemen and Holly Eccles were competing in the Cadet U48kg group and made it a Pinewood one-two as Batemen won gold and Eccles secured silver to make it a fantastic day for both fighters.

Will Mainkrodt had a superb day, gaining valuable ranking points on his way to a gold in the U73kg, whilst Jade Eccles excelled as she won a bronze medal in the U63kg Cadets.

Pinewood also made their annual trip to the Kent Open for a two-day event that was heavily attended by European fighters.

It was a solid performance from the Pinewood fighters as they enjoyed a solid weekend and picked up a haul of medals.

The younger fighters competed on Saturday and Dan Franklin provided a standout performance, ending his recent run of poor form with a blistering display of throws and ground work to take gold at U38kg.

Crissie Webb had a good day, taking silver at U70kg and Bateman took gold at U48kg, following on from her success in Bradford.

Terri Gough, who is now moving from promising novice to reliable winner took gold at U44kg as she dispatched all before her in determined style.

Wade Muttitt put together his usual display of stylish judo to take a silver in the Grade B band, only losing the final in the golden score with a penalty.

Tobias Trafford also enjoyed a successful day as he took great strides forward to win a bronze at U27kg as well as bronze at U34kg.

There was also impressive bronze medals for Oliver Young and Callum Jones in the U34kg and U38kg respectively.

Sunday saw the youth and seniors take to the mat in the final day of competing.

Jade Eccles in the youth U57kg group got off to a disappointing start as she lost her first fight to a strong Dutch girl but she improved considerably to win her remaining fights and take bronze after several impressive display.

Olivia Spellman competing in the youth section at U57kg managed a silver advancing through some gruelling fights against experienced opponents.

Spellman performed admirably but fell just short to a vastly experienced opponent in the final, but she could be happy with her efforts which gained her a deserved silver medal.

Mallinkrodt moved up a weight group to fight in the youth section at U81kg and despite being smaller than all his opponents, he fought with skill, intelligence and tactical awareness to secure a fantastic gold.

The fighter credited his performance to his senior Pinewood team mates Sean Dineen and Chris Thorne, who have been training with him recently and helped him overcome bigger opponents when making the step up. which was invaluable here.

Thorne was in action himself and put in a determined performance to take a well deserved bronze at U81kg.
