A FAMILY-RUN burger company was sat at the top of the table for Reading Festival’s Alfresco Awards.

Reading Borough Council-run awards recognise the highest standard of food hygiene and the best managed outlet at the festival.

George’s Campsite Cafe and Burger Grill beat the competition by scoring top marks in the awards for outdoor caterers.

Louise Rogers, representing George’s Campsite Café, said: “We are absolutely delighted with our award. This is a family-run business and our success is down to a combined family effort.

“Our wonderful staff have all been happy to contribute to making this year a real success for us.”

Founded in 1969 the company has been catering at the festival for years, with their traditional burgers, chicken and chips winning a silver award for 2013.

Graeme Hoskin, Reading’s head of health, said: “I’d like to congratulate George’s Campsite Café, Best of British and Veggie Planet for their well-deserved awards.

“For the last 17 years, the most hygienic food providers have been given Alfresco Awards thanks to this successful and popular scheme run by the council.”

Every year the council inspects the traders, visiting 128 this year, with a shortlist being put forward to Festival Republic, the festival organisers, to choose a winner.

Paul Gittings, Reading’s lead member for culture, sport and consumer services, said: “People who go to the festival want to have fun, but also be safe in the knowledge that they are buying food that is of good quality, hygienic and up to standard.

“The awards show the quality of catering and sheer choice of food on offer this year has been of an excellent standard.”

This year 31 outlets were put forward for the competition, now in it’s 17th year.

To be put forward they must achieve a maximum rating of five during the inspection and pass strict hygiene and, health and safety, criteria.

The winner gets a free pitch at next year’s show whilst second place gets a 20 per cent discount and third place 10 per cent.

Silver went to Best of British, run by David Bibby, and Veggie Planet Ltd completed the podium.
