A timeline has emerged of how two of Bracknell’s top councillors got caught up in helping fund the convicted former Mayor.

The Labour Party has suspended two of its most qualified elected representatives: Bracknell Forest councillors Mary Temperton and Dr Roy Bailey.

Mrs Temperton, until last week the leader of Bracknell Forest Council, is a passionate environmentalist, a retired teacher and the widow of an eminent Climate scientist and meteorologist.

Meanwhile, Dr Bailey is a former senior police officer, academic, and holds a doctorate in criminal justice.  His daughter is a high-flying government minister and the MP for Reading West and Mid-Berkshire.

They are being investigated after it emerged that they helped raise money for their co-councillor who has since been convicted at Winchester Crown Court of ‘Perverting the Course of Justice’.

Timeline of events:

  • May 2023 – May 2024:   Naheed Ejaz serves as mayor of Bracknell with her son Diwan Khan acting as consort.
  • Jan 2024: Diwan Khan asked to resign as consort, but was treated as 'innocent until proven guilty'.
  • July 2024:  Diwan Khan commits rape of a 15-year-old after giving her vodka and ecstasy, and filming the attack on a mobile phone.
  • September 12, 2024:   In an early morning raid, the police arrest Diwan Khan – his mother comes to the door and tells him, in Urdu, to conceal a phone.
  • September 14, 2024:  Diwan Khan appears before magistrates in Southampton, and is remanded in custody pending trial.
  • At some point in September Naheed Ejaz steps down as a councillor.
  • Late September / October 2024: Naheed Ejaz is taken ill and spends some time in hospital.   Her fellow councillors believe she is facing a ‘financial crisis’, she is unable to pay her rent, and they decide to raise some money for her.
  • November 1, 2024:  Dr Roy Bailey and Mary Temperton appeal to their friends for financial support for a friend who is facing a financial crisis.   It is not known how much money they raised.
  • November, 2024, a by-election is held for Naheed Ejaz’s seat on Bracknell Forest Council.
  • February 27, 2025:  Naheed Ejaz appears before magistrates in Basingstoke accused of perverting the course of justice and is given unconditional bail.
  • February 2026:  Naheed Ejaz and her son stand trial at Winchester Crown Court.
  • Diwan Khan is convicted of rape and Naheed Ejaz of Perverting the Course of Justice.
  • March 2026:   Cllr Mary Temperton and Dr Roy Bailey are suspended by the Labour Party.

In a statement before she quit as leader, Mrs Temperton said:  “When Naheed Ejaz was selected to stand for councillor back in 2023, we had no reason to suspect that she would be involved in any criminal proceedings.

“After her own arrest in September 2024, Naheed Ejaz resigned as a councillor – this was the first time I was aware of the investigation and her involvement.

“I want to thank the brave victim for coming forward and showing such courage and I also want to thank the police for their full and thorough investigation to secure justice.”

Mary Temperton and Roy Bailey were both approached in writing this article but were unable to comment due to the ongoing investigation.
