IT’S time for another look at the stats following Warrington Wolves’ Round 10 victory.
The Wire ran out comfortable winners over Hull FC at The Halliwell Jones Stadium as they bounced back from defeat at Salford Red Devils at the earliest opportunity.
Sam Burgess’ side put in a more convincing performance overall, with several individuals standing out.
Here, we’ve picked out a few interesting things from the player stats available on the Super League website – it should be noted that no figures are available for Arron Lindop or Max Wood.
A new high for Dufty’s metre-making
Staggeringly high figures for metres made have become common place for Matt Dufty this season – he does lead the competitions metre-making charts after all.
However, Friday night saw him hit a new high of 248 metres gained from 26 carries at an average of just under 10 per carry.
Indeed, he was close to making twice as many metres as any of his Wire teammates, with George Williams the next highest with 131.
Add that to seven tackle busts and assists for two of Josh Thewlis’ three tries and it makes for another influential display from Wire’s number one.
Aside from Dufty and Williams, three other Wire players cleared the 100m mark – Thewlis (122), Paul Vaughan (118) and Toby King (111).
Hard-working Williams
We already knew George Williams was a half-back who is just as happy rolling his sleeves up and doing the tough stuff as well as the flashy plays he is capable of.
Friday night was another example of this as he topped his side’s carry count with 32 – more than he has made in any Super League game this season.
That included quite a few second or third-tackle drives with Wire in their own half, with conditions dictating the need to roll up the sleeves.
On the other side of the ball, he also made 22 tackles to cap a grafting display.
More impressive defence from Nicholson
Wire’s right edge has been vulnerable defensively at times this year, but Matty Nicholson’s return to it has certainly made a positive impact.
Once again, he topped the team’s tackle charts having completed 46 including 13 from marker with just two misses.
A not-insignificant 87 run metres from nine carries with the ball meant another display of quiet effectiveness from the back rower.
Sam Powell was next on the list with 35 tackles with Paul Vaughan (30), Ben Currie (29) and Danny Walker (27) among the usual suspects to rack up the hits.
