MID Wales football has lost another of its greats following the passing of legendary Llanidloes Town captain David Phillips.

Phillips rose to prominence as part of the successful Llanidloes Town side of the 1960s and was known as a flying and skilful winger as well as forward and club captain.

Later he coached the club to two Mid Wales League titles.

A club spokesman said: "We are devastated to hear the news of the passing of Mr David Phillips.

Phillips captained the club to the 1962 Montgomeryshire Cup and two league cups in the 1960s and was also the captain who lifted the 1964 Welsh Amateur Cup.

He would later lead the club to Montgomeryshire Cup glory as coach in 1973.

The club spokesman added: "We send our heartfelt sympathies to Dai's friends and family.  Dai will be missed by everyone in the local community.

"Rest easy Dai Phil, you've earned it."
