A local man is set to run the London Marathon for Children with Cancer UK after his close friend's son was diagnosed with cancer.

Mark Sandford from Sandhurst is running the TCS London Marathon in aid of Children with Cancer UK, one of the leading national charities dedicated to childhood cancer research.

Mark was inspired to take on the 26.2-mile challenge because of seeing how cancer in children can upturn people's lives after a close friend’s son was diagnosed two years ago.

Mark said: “Having seen the devastating effects on a family friend, I wanted to do something to raise money to help people in a similar position.

"I ran the marathon last year to raise money for the hospital that was caring for them at the time and thought I would take on the challenge once again."

Every day in the UK, 10 families are given the devastating news that their child has cancer.

Children with Cancer UK funds research into the causes of childhood cancers and the development of kinder, less toxic treatments. They support young people and their families through treatment and beyond.

The TCS London Marathon is the biggest annual fundraising event for Children with Cancer UK and this year the charity is hoping to raise £2 million.
