Great Western Railway is urging people not to travel after several routes have been closed.

Earlier this evening (January 4) emergency services were called to an incident between Reading and Didcot Parkway.

Members of the public were notified of the disruption at 6:40pm, when some trains were cancelled and delayed.

It has since been confirmed that a person has been hit by a train in the area.

Heavy rain has also been creating issues on the tracks.

A Great Western Railway spokesperson said: "Flooding has closed several routes and emergency services are working on the line west of Reading after a person was hit by a train earlier this evening and we are unable to run trains beyond this point.

"We’re sorry for the severe disruption this has caused customers this evening."

Amid the wet conditions, staff and managers are said to be at stations assisting customers amid the disruption, which is expected until the end of the day.

"Customers are advised not to travel this evening," added Great Western Railway.

"If you’ve got tickets for travel today, they will be valid tomorrow.

"If possible, please return in your direction of travel and make alternative arrangements.

"GWR and Elizabeth Line services will continue to operate between Paddington and Reading.

"There is no onward travel beyond Reading."
