A WOKINGHAM man has run 100 kilometres around the Caribbean island of Antigua to raise money for the local children.

Karl Thompson, 55, who is the managing director of travel company - Unique Vacations UK, has completed 25 kilometres per day over four days as part of the inaugural Sandals Foundation Island Run – Antigua 2023.

He took part in a team of 25 ultra-marathon runners and raised over £100,000 for paediatric healthcare in the Caribbean.

Starting and ending at Dickenson Bay where Sandals Grande Antigua is located, the route took the group past island landmarks such as Jolly Harbour, English Harbour, Crab Hill, Nelson’s Dockyard and the Sir Viv Richards’ Cricket Stadium.

Joined by a small group of three colleagues, Mr Thompson raised £101,216 which will be donated to the SickKids Caribbean Initiative and the Paediatric Unit of Mount St. John's Medical Centre in Antigua via the Sandals Foundation, Sandals Resorts’ philanthropic arm.

Mr Thompson said: “The Sandals Foundation Island Run was an exceptionally challenging but immensely rewarding experience.

“The hot and humid weather conditions were intense, but these were the type of challenges that we had anticipated and taking part alongside a team of colleagues meant we were able to support each other along the way.

“All of the work put in by the Sandals Foundation was incredible.”
