Last week Wokingham Borough Council promoted International E-Waste Day, asking members of the community to rethink how they are disposing of electrical appliances.
If sent to landfill, electrical or electronic waste pollutes both the earth and water. This then poses a threat to the population’s health and to the state of the environment.
The council is telling members of the community to avoid throwing old electrical items in the bin. They suggest trying to repair the item if it’s faulty by taking it to a repair café.
They have also suggested that the appliances could be taken to charity shops, or even sold on platforms like eBay if the item is still in good condition.
Finally, the council has also reminded the community that if electrical appliances have to be thrown away, they need to be recycled. Any electrical item can be recycled if it has a plug, battery, or cable.
