Plans for what will replace the High Street car park in Bracknell town centre after it has been demolished could soon be revealed.

Bracknell Forest Council leader Mary Temperton said leading councillors will be shown new plans in “autumn 2023.”

The car park is set to close at the end of October after engineers found that the concrete used in its construction was “corroding.” It has not yet been made public whether this is the same RAAC concrete that has forced school buildings across England to close.

Bracknell Forest Council’s Executive Committee – its leading body of councillors – agreed the closure at a meeting in July. They also agreed that the site would be added to plans to redevelop the town centre’s “southern site gateway.”

Now, councillor Temperton has said the Executive will be shown those plans at one of its meetings this autumn.

Speaking to a full council meeting on Wednesday, September 13, she said: “The Executive also agreed for the High Street car park site to be added to the Bracknell town centre southern gateway site masterplan area.

“Outline plans will be presented for consideration by the Executive in autumn 2023.”

Councillor Gareth Barnard asked Councillor Temperton if the rest of the council would get a chance to see the plans and have a say.

He said: “I’m pleased to see that the site will be added to the southern gateway outline plan that will be brought before the Executive. When will that plan be shared with other councillors so we can see what’s possible on that site?

“Is that something that members will have a say on after an initial plan? Will we have a chance to see what’s proposed for the future?”

Councillor Temperton replied that every councillor would be shown the plans “as quickly as possible.”

She said: “You’ll be informed as soon as it’s possible. As soon as we’ve got some decision on what is happening and the plans have been proposed then all members will be involved as quickly as possible.

“It will certainly be discussed, where members will have an input into those plans.”

High Street car park was built in the 1970s and has already had its middle parking bays closed to the public in order to spread the weight load. This decision was made to provide a temporary solution to keep it safe and open.

But a recent report by surveyors said that this cannot continue as the structure is "corroding".

The surveyors recommended closing the car park as the level of corrosion within the concrete reinforcement cannot be remedied. The council’s Executive voted for this at a meeting on July 18.
