An environmental movement group has announced that it will be attending Wokingham’s Vegan Market today (13/7).

From 11 am to 3 pm in Wokingham Market Place, members will be engaging with the public about climate and biodiversity emergencies that are linked.

This comes after the government's ‘lack of action’ on climate change issues which is thought to be the cause of the severe weather seen throughout the world this Summer.

XR member Lucy Harding says,  ‘The IPCC (International Panel on Climate Change) has said that it is vital to keep the global temperature increase below 1.5 degrees C. [17] World leaders have pledged this but the UK is failing to lead and is not doing anywhere near enough to prevent the catastrophe of a 2 degrees C increase.’

Groups that have contacted the Prime Minister urging him to refocus on the UK’s net zero goal include Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace UK, the National Trust, RSPCA and RSPCB.

They have all expressed their ‘deep alarm’ and have warned him about the green pledges he made, stating ‘We will not stand by whilst politicians use the environment as a political football’.

In a recent Radio 4 interview,[14] one of the scientist signatories, Lord Stern, [15] claimed that up to COP26 the UK was leading the world in addressing global warming issues but since then the government’s commitment has faded.

He said, ‘The cost of inaction is greater than the cost of action’, pointing out that instead of approving a coal mine in Cumbria and issuing new licenses for oil and gas exploration, the government should be looking at insulation and renewables investments as a great growth strategy for the UK as well as a strategy for the climate and the environment.
