A 95-year-old daredevil is set to take on the challenge of a lifetime to become the oldest person in history to complete a wing walk.

John Symmonds, 95 from Warfield lost his wife in February 2021 after supporting her through her illness with the support of Thames Hospice nurses.

As a thank you for their compassion and care that they provided, John will take to the skies on June 20th with Aero Super Batics in an experience that will set a new world record.

The Warfield man said that with the guidance and support of the nurses and family, Ann slipped away in her sleep surrounded by the love of her family.

He explained: “I decided that I wanted to do a challenge in aid of Thames Hospice, but I didn’t want to just complete something that anyone could do. I wanted it to be adventurous and unforgettable.

“I think I’m really going to enjoy it. In 95 years, there aren’t many things that I haven’t done but this will be a first for me. Although sky diving was another option, I really wanted to do it by myself.”

At 95 years old, the Kent born ex-production engineer still has an active social life which includes folk dancing and circle dancing.

As well as his three daughters which he said ‘are something else’, John told the News that dancing is the secret to a long-life.

In a show of support for what John is attempting this month, he has received hundreds of donations on his Just Giving page and also from his local Warfield Tesco’s.

Words of support have been left alongside the many donations that will go towards the work that Thames Hospice does for families.

Stu and Megan commented on the page alongside their donation saying: “Well done John! You’ve set the bar high, what an incredible achievement at 95 and for a great cause. I know first hand how incredible the Thames Hospice are. Good luck!”

Another anonymous supporter said: “The world needs more Johns! Amazing!”

John added: “It’s just amazing how much support I’ve received. Really I’m just over the moon and so happy that people have chosen to not only support me but also the charity.

“So far we’ve raised over £3,000 and we’ve still got more time to raise as much money as possible for this amazing charity.”
