Residents have been reminded to ‘Be Fire Aware’ this Summer following the shocking wildfire fire that took place in Surrey last month.

With temperatures rising throughout the UK, the risk of fire across areas of forest and greenland rises exponentially.

When visiting parks and countryside, people have been advised to remember certain rules which are the main causes of wildfires.

These are to avoid fires or BBQ’s, dispose of cigarettes responsibly and take litter home where bins are full/unavailable.

Thames Basin Heaths Partnership in Woking witnessed the fire that destroyed 60 hectres of habitat and has appealed to local nearby councils to avoid the same fate.

Sarah from the organisation said: “This is the sight we dread! We haven’t heard yet what caused the wildfire on Ash Ranges in Surrey to break out on Saturday, but unofficial estimates say that 60 hectares of habitat may have been lost.

“This is especially shocking news at this time of year, when Nightjars are laying their first eggs.”

If a fire does break out the best steps are to get to a safe space and keep your distance, note the location of the fire, phone 999 and ask for Royal Berkshire fire and Rescue and give as much information as you can.
