A BERKSHIRE theatre and sports centre are among the winners of the 2023 architecture awards.

11 winners of the 2023 RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) South Award were announced at a ceremony on May 18, recognising them as the “best new buildings in the region”.

Berkshire had two winners at the 2023 awards including Eton Sports and Aquatics Centre.

This 4-court multi-purpose sports hall designed by Hopkins Architects was described as “an excellent example of robust modern architecture that combines firmness, commodity, and delight”.

Horris Hill School Theatre, Newbury, designed by Jonathan Tuckey Design also won an award.

“Promoting self-confidence and self-esteem through the arts is evident in the design of its new theatre”, RIBA says.

“This low-energy building cleverly combines historical references, the playful use of materials and bold ambitions to create a wonderful facility.”

Presented since 1966, the RIBA awards have “set the standards for great architecture across the country”.

Other winners in the South include St Hilda's College in Oxford and March House, a stilt house on the banks of the River Thames.

RIBA president, Simon Allford, said: “Winning a RIBA regional award is a fantastic achievement. These projects, selected by a rigorous peer review process, represent the very best of the region’s new architecture.

“Inspiring buildings and spaces bring joy to all our lives, and this year’s award winners certainly fit that bill. Many congratulations to all.”

RIBA South Award winners will now be considered for the RIBA National Award in recognition of their architectural excellence, which will be announced on June 22.

The shortlist for the RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year will be drawn from the RIBA National Award-winning projects later in the year. y
