An Ascot resident has hit back after an incident of ‘illegal parking’ has caused upset among the community.

According to Ros Hopton, whose 90 year-old Mum has lived in the area for 60 years, people have been forced to step onto the busy road due a car which is blocking the pavement.

Park Drive is a popular residential area in Sunningdale and is known to have a large number of families and elderly. The fact that residents with disabilities and families with pushchairs have been made to step onto the road has become a concern for the safety of residents in the vicinity.

Ros explained: “My mum has lived in the area for 60 years and this is the first time that anything like this has occurred. It’s been going on since last year where the car is blocking the pavement in front of the house 100% of the time.

“This is becoming a concern for locals that it is only a matter of time before someone gets struck by a passing vehicle. Other residents have also expressed concerns on social media.

“Although the car is taxed and MOT’d, which means it is legal to be driven on the roads, the danger that it is causing is real.

“Between me and my brother, we have exhausted all avenues to get the car off the pavement. The only thing we want is to make sure that pedestrians that use the footpath are safe.”

Although this has been reported to the council, they have commented that their enforcement powers only stretch to dealing with cars parked on double and single yellow lines. Therefore the issue has been forwarded to Thames Valley Police.

A council spokesperson said: “The council has powers to enforce parking restrictions, such double and single yellow lines, however Thames Valley Police is responsible for addressing driving offences, driving on footpaths, and pavement parking where there are no parking restrictions and the vehicle is obstructing other road users, a driveway, access or pavement.

"We would encourage all motorists to always park and drive legally, safely and considerately of other road users, irrespective of the parking restrictions.”

We have contacted Thames Valley Police for a comment.
