CUTS to weekly rubbish and recycling collections across Wokingham have been given the go-ahead, with concerns being raised for rubbish build up once bin collections are slashed.

Wokingham Borough Council has agreed the changes that will see general rubbish and recycling collections move from weekly to alternate weekly.

This means residents will have their general rubbish collected one week and recycling collected the next, while food waste will continue to be collected every week.

As part of the changes, residents will also receive a wheeled bin to store and put out their general rubbish, instead of the current system of using blue plastic bags.

At its meeting on Tuesday, March 21, Wokingham Borough Council’s decision-making executive agreed to the changes.

The authority is expected to roll out alternate weekly collections from late Summer/early Autumn 2024.

Changes are being made to encourage residents to recycle more, reduce the amount of waste they produce, and separate out food waste for recycling.

Wokingham Borough Council is sharing the benefits of the new plans: "Alternate weekly collections will help the council make savings of £500,000 next year and £1 million per year from the following year, and increase its recycling rate by 10 per cent, getting it closer to the target of 70 per cent in its climate emergency action plan."

Despite the benefits mentioned at a meeting on March 21, cutting bin collections have raised concerns on social media that rubbish will build up across the borough.
