THE jury in the trial of a retired GP charged with the indecent assault of seven women in the 1990s has now retired.

Stephen Cox, now of Marton, Welshpool in Shropshire, has been charged with eight counts of indecent assault on seven different women at a Warfield surgery between 1990 and 1997.

The 62-year-old worked at Ralph Rides Surgery in Bracknell, which is now known as the Waterfield Practice, more than two decades ago. During this time, it is alleged he committed a range of sexual offences which he denies.

After two and a half weeks at Reading Crown Court, the trial is now drawing to a close with the jury retiring today after listening to all the evidence.

Judge Sarah Campbell, who is presiding over the case, has finished summarising the evidence heard throughout the trial today (March 15).

The twelve-strong jury then retired to deliberate on the eight counts of indecent assault.

It is unknown how long the jury will take to discuss the counts but it is predicted a verdict will be returned by the end of the week.
