A Bracknell school boy has turned his passion for sustainability into a fundraiser in order to afford a school trip to Italy.

Zach Callinan, a year seven pupil from Kings Academy put his thinking cap on after learning about an organised ski-trip priced at £860.

Mum, Letitia Callinan said: “When Zach arrived home with the letter about the trip I told him it was a great opportunity and that we should do it, however it was a lot of money.

“He came up with the idea to raise funds for the trip by helping around town in some way, and in the end we settled on litter picking.

“Because it’s a hot topic at the moment and my other three children learn a lot about sustainability in school, we thought it was a brilliant way to both raise funds and help the environment.”

Over the next three months he will be dedicating his free time for one hour a week in and around Bracknell's beauty spots.

Areas that are being prioritised when litter-picking are around schools where people often leave fast food wrappers and rubbish lying on the ground.

Letitia explained: “Most people are really inspired by it however there is also an element of negativity that some people have shown.

“The way we look at it is that we are encouraging the children to work. He’s only 11 and he can’t go and get a job in a supermarket, so this is work for him.

“He’s given up an hour of his week to do something that isn’t his hobby. He’s a busy chap but he’s still dedicating his time and works hard with everything that he does.”

So far, the GoFundMe has raised a total of £395 from the £860 target with many people leaving messages of support and generous donations.

“The GoFundMe has actually been going very well. I thought that even if we got ten pounds that would be great. Just something to help. However donations are flying in," Letitia said.

“The support is motivating and it makes him want to go out and do it more.”

Parents, Letitia and Levi have said that they are so proud of their son for getting up and doing his bit to help the planet and create a healthier cleaner and more attractive enviroment.

Alongside Zach, Letitia and Levi have three other children.

“My three other kids have also been inspired to help when Zach goes out every week, so it is lovely that we all get to do it as a family now.”

"The school has been absolutely amazing and plays a massive part in teaching the kids about sustainability and recycling in all forms, making sure they are well educated.

Zach Callinan added: “I just want to thank everyone who has donated so far. I thought it would be a great way to help the environment, clean the streets and raise money for the upcoming trip to Italy.”
