Plans to install a 5G mast in Three Mile Cross are the latest in a stream of proposals submitted to Wokingham Council since last year.
CK Hutchinson Networks UK Ltd, a telecommunications company that operates the 3 networks, proposes erecting a 20-metre high monopole on a footway of Basingstoke Road.
There were 10 other sites in the area were considered, including the rooftops of residential addresses. However, they were all discounted for reasons such as the proximity to a Listed Building, that it wouldn’t deliver the required level of coverage, and, in the case of the rooftops, the buildings weren’t tall enough.
Proposals also include one wrap-around equipment cabinet at the base of the monopole, two further equipment cabinets and one electric meter cabinet.

A height of 20m is “essential” in order to ensure the latest 4G and new 5G technologies are provided in the Three Mile Cross area, the applicant claims.
The Local Democracy Reporting Service has found this is the 19 application to install 5G equipment in Wokingham since the start of 2021, the overwhelming majority of which have been refused.
This year alone, permission has been granted to erect the equipment on land at Meldreth Way in Lower Earley and land near Ruscombe Way in Twyford.
Whilst many applications have been refused, including for proposals on land off Colemansmoor Road in Woodley and Keephatch Road near Wokingham Town Centre.
