Rishi Sunak was announced as the new Prime Minister on Monday, resulting in a mixed response from local Conservative MPs.

Mr Sunak beat Penny Mordaunt and Boris Johnson to the post after the other two runners didn’t achieve the required 100 nominations from fellow Tory MPs.

Bracknell MP James Sunderland, who previously supported Ms Mordaunt in the first of this year’s two leadership contests, said he was “delighted” that Mr Sunak had been elected.

He said there is “no question” that he has the support of the parliamentary party and “a clear mandate to lead”.

“Given the challenges that lie ahead, I am confident that we will now come together as a party to work on solving them. Particularly in growing our economy, providing financial stability and supporting families with the cost-of-living crisis,” Mr Sunderland added.

However, Wokingham’s MP John Redwood, who was a staunch supporter of the shortest serving Prime Minister in history, Liz Truss, said a consultation of members of the Wokingham Conservative Association “put Boris Johnson in first place”.

In a blog post, he accused the new Prime Minister of not answering his questions about the economy and claimed Mr Sunak enthusiasts support him “because he is not Boris [Johnson]”.

“Amongst constituents a few more favoured Rishi, but this seems to be particularly true of people who do not express Conservative values and outlooks – and are unlikely to given the attitudes they do express,” Mr Redwood added.

Mr Sunak will look to rebuild trust amongst the public, at the same time as fixing a fractious Tory Party.
