It took special constables, members of the public and the neighbourhood policing team to catch the equines in London Road.

Police escorted the horses back to their field in a prime example of "neigh-bourhood Policing," Thames Valley Police wrote on Facebook.

"We are aware there are only two in this picture, the other one was escorted separately and was camera shy."

The incident triggered a flurry of horse puns on Thames Valley Police social media.

“They're safe now. That's the mane thing,” commented a woman.

She followed up with: “Catching them must have been a mare.”

“Hope they weren’t lost furlong,” said another, followed by: “Hope you weren’t saddled with too much paperwork”

One man said: “Do you think their escape was planned or a spur of the moment thing?”

“I hope the comments don't get out of hand otherwise you'll have to rein them in,” replied a user.

“No harm no foal,” wrote a commenter.
