MP for Bracknell James Sunderland has resigned from Government.

The Conservative politician is the latest of 37 MPs on the Government payroll who have stood down from their post.

The resignations come amid calls from within the Conservative party for Boris Johnson to leave No 10.

In a statement, Sunderland said: “I have today resigned as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.

“I would like to thank everyone who has taken the trouble to share their views with me in recent months.

“I continue to serve the people of Bracknell, Crowthorne, Finchampstead, Sandhurst and Wokingham Without to the best of my ability.”

A delegation of Cabinet ministers are preparing to tell Boris Johnson to leave Downing Street, as he haemorrhaged support across the Tory ranks, according to reports.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, who was key to the Prime Minister’s fight for survival during partygate, is among those who will demand he quits, sources told the PA news agency.

Long-standing ally Brandon Lewis, who believes Mr Johnson’s position is “now untenable”, was understood to be part of the group, as was Welsh Secretary Simon Hart.

Reports even suggested Nadhim Zahawi, who was only appointed Chancellor on Tuesday, will join the group.
