The development of 14 new flats at the site of a former builders merchants has finally been approved, two years after the original application was submitted.

Cleanslate limited, a development company in Chobham, will redevelop 1 Barkham Road, previously occupied by Jewson’s, into residences with associated car parking spaces and landscaping.

The site lies to the west of the town centre at the junction of Barkham Road and Oxford Road, directly adjacent to Wokingham train station.

The 14 flats will consist of six one-bedroom flats and eight two-bedroom flats, with 14 car parking spaces and provision of bike storage.

The building will be a mix of two and three-storey elements, as well as incorporating the use of red and buff brick detailing, to address both the Barkham Road and Oxford Road frontages.

A public consultation was carried out in relation to the proposals way back in January of 2019, where the plans received a positive response from neighbours.

A local resident of the site, Adrian Davis, even lodged a comment against the application querying why "nothing seems to have happened” with regards to the building work commencing.

He added: “As a neighbour of this site I am greatly looking forward to this development replacing the derelict and run-down site.”
