A local MP has been sanctioned by the Russian government in a retaliatory move over the UK’s response to its invasion of Ukraine.

Wokingham MP, John Redwood, was one of 287 British MPs placed on the list by Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The department announced yesterday that it would impose ‘personal restrictions’ on the MPs in response to the UK sanctioning 386 members of the Russian parliament.

The action means the MPs will be banned from entering Russia.

The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said the MPs “should regard it as a badge of honour” and many politicians publicly welcomed their inclusion.

John Redwood did not respond when approached for comment. However, another MP, Conservative Mark Harper, tweeted that he was "proud to be on this list."

"Russia really hates being called out for their illegal invasion of Ukraine and disgraceful war crimes," he said.

The Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov's department accused those sanctioned of the “whipping up of Russophobic hysteria” and taking “the most active part” in imposing penalties on its officials.

In total there are 213 members of the Conservatives and 74 from Labour on the list.

The Kremlin has threatened to add more names in the future.
