Oppositon parties in Wokingham have called on both the Prime Minister and Chancellor to resign after they were issued police fines for breaking lockdown laws.

Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak were issued fines as part of the police investigation into illegal gatherings at Number 10 and Whitehall during the pandemic - so far, more than 50 FPN’s have been handed out in relation to the offences.

Johnson is the first Prime Minister and Sunak the first Chancellor to receive a police fine while in office.

The Conservative MP for Wokingham, John Redwood, did not respond when approached and has not made a public statement on the matter.

Wokingham Liberal Democrats have called for Redwood to sack Johnson and Sunak following the revelation of the fines. They are also calling “for Parliament to be recalled immediately so MPs can hold a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister.”

Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for Wokingham, Clive Jones, said: “Whilst people in Wokingham made heart-breaking sacrifices during lockdowns, Boris Johnson and his team were partying in Downing Street.

The leader of the Wokingham Labour Group, Cllr Rachel Burgess, said: “You cannot have law makers who are willing to break the law or who are ignorant of the laws they themselves have made. The police believe Johnson and Sunak have committed crimes. They should both resign, it is that simple.”

“Our candidate for Loddon ward, Majid Nagra, was a carer in the pandemic. He was one of those who had to tell relatives they could not visit their loved ones who were in his care. He is rightly furious and sickened by the […] revelations.

“Even more sickening is listening to Conservative MPs hiding behind the Russian war in Ukraine as a reason not to remove Johnson. We are not at war. Ukraine is at war.”

The local Green Party did not respond when approached for comment.

Having previously claimed in the House of Commons that “the guidance was followed and the rules were followed at all times,” Johnson "now humbly accepts" he did breach COVID laws.

Ministers deemed to have knowingly misled parliament are expected to hand in their resignation, as outlined in the Ministerial Code.

However, Johnson and Sunak have both stated that they will not be resigning, with Johnson insisting he "spoke in completely good faith" claiming “it did not occur to me that this might have been a breach of the rules.”

Cllr Jones continued: “We all have painful memories of that lockdown, from not being able to see dying relatives, to being separated for months on end from our friends and family. How on earth can Conservative MPs keep supporting a law-breaking Prime Minister and Chancellor?

“Our country needs leadership right now, not a government in chaos.”

Labour party leader, Keir Starmer, has also called for them both to resign, saying they have “dishonored their office.”

Cllr Burgess added: “The silence from Redwood and local Conservative councillors has been deafening. Their silence tells you all you need to know about their values and their morals - they really do believe it is one rule for them and another rule for the rest of us.

“In a democracy, the most effective way for residents to make their voices heard is at the ballot box. Soon people [will] have the opportunity to send a very clear message - we do not want a law breaker as our Prime Minister.”
