Thousands of UK residents have signed up to offer rooms to Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war.

More than 100,000 people signed up for the “Homes for Ukraine” scheme within the first day of the government announcement.

Households who sign-up to the scheme will receive £350 a month, tax free and be expected to commit to a minimum of six months of housing an individual or a group.

Wokingham

Wokingham Borough Council has pledged to “do all it can” to support Ukraine and its people.

Wokingham MP John Redwood didn't directly say he would offer up a room to a Ukrainian refugee.

Although he said: “This scheme will harness the generous spirits of U.K. citizens who want to offer free accommodation to Ukrainian refugees.

“I am very happy to help anyone who needs assistance from the government. The Council is also willing to help.”

The council leader, John Halsall, said: “I have led the borough and spoken about covid over the last two years. I would never have believed that we would have emerged from covid to a potentially greater tragedy.”

Bracknell Forest

Bracknell Forest Council has vowed to “stand firmly with Ukraine” and offered “heartfelt sympathies” to those affected.

Bracknell Forest is home to more than a dozen people believed to have fled conflict or faced persecution in other countries, figures show, as the UK prepares to welcome more people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The council are currently unaware of the number of Ukrainian people who will be seeking refuge in the borough but have promised “to keep the community updated” once they have further information.

MP for Bracknell Forest, James Sunderland, was approached but declined to comment.
