The amount of council tax you will have to pay in Bracknell Forest this year has been revealed.

Tax payers in Bracknell will see the biggest rise in council tax in the area, with an increase of 4.49 per cent on last year’s bill.

Of that amount two per cent of the increase will go to paying for council services, one per cent will be an increase of the adult social care precept, and a further 1.5 per cent adult social care precept which wasn’t levied last year, that the council can carry forward.

It is the maximum amount that the council can increase the tax by without calling a referendum.

In neighbouring Wokingham and Reading, increases of 2.99 per cent have been agreed.

The Bracknell Forest council tax rise is higher because it did not levy the 1.5 per cent adult social care precept which it had the option of doing last year.

The increase was agreed, along with the council’s 2022/23 budget, at a meeting this week (Wednesday, February 23).

The total amount is different for each area because council tax is raised by four bodies: Bracknell Forest Council, the police and fire service, and parish and town councils – which each charge different amounts.

A last minute effort to clip the increase to 3.49 per cent was launched the Bracknell Labour group leader councillor Mary Temperton, representative for Great Hollands North, who proposed an amendment to the budget.

However, the attempt was shot down by 32 votes to four.

Conservative councillors argued that the more modest increase proposal was a ‘knee jerk’ response to the budget, and that the Conservative administration’s proposals had been properly consulted on.

Tax payers have opportunities to reduce the bill thanks to Bracknell Forest's council tax reduction scheme - you can find out whether you are eligible on the council website.

The reduction scheme is separate to the £150 council tax rebate announced by the government to eligible band A-D taxpyayers.

The new council tax levels will be payable this April, the start of the 2022/23 financial year.
