THIS month we reported how an award-winning chef from London, Kuldeep Singh, had used his expertise in Indian cooking to bring a fine-dining experience to residents in Wokingham.

Not only that, but the recently refurbished restaurant boasts Southern Indian dishes offering something unique to a traditional curry house.

Sultan -- one of Wokingham's oldest restaurants opened this month.

Bracknell News:

The hidden gem located in Market Place looks nothing fancy from the outside, but when you step inside the restaurant, you're taken aback by the gorgeous character.

It's a Grade II listed building and this really shows through the cosy space and wooden beams above you.

The fragrant smell of spices from the kitchen greets you like a warm hug, not to mention the friendly staff and owner Raja Majid who took us to our table.

As soon as we sat down we felt like royalty, with the waiters expertly advising us what dishes to try on the menu.

For the purposes of the review, we were lucky enough to try all aspects of the menu, from starter, mains all the way through to pudding.

Dishes are still comforting and in keeping to a typical Friday night curry house. You do get your typical Chicken Tikka Massala curries and kormas, but the menu offers way more fancier options than that.

For starters, we tucked into the Spinach & Feta Cheese Samosa Chaat (£5.50) which is served with chutneys and chickpeas vermicelli.

It was earthy, warm and rich with flavour. Every bite was soft and the cheese melted in the mouth. It wasn’t too filling either and was the perfect tease to what was to come next.

If you’re a lover of seafood then I would recommend opting for the garlic and pepper calamari starter (£8.85). I was surprised to see it on the menu, but Sultan steps away from your typical curry house.

The squid rings were soft in texture and lightly flavoured from the crushed garlic sauce. The flavour on the peppers packed a punch and complimented the dish entirely.

Then we nibbled on some gorgeous Patiala lamb chops (£6.00) which melted off the bone. They were a delight to eat and the flavour of the ginger marinade was to die for. I would order these again in a heartbeat.

A number of dishes tantalised the taste buds on the menu, including an Indian take on the classic French mussels dish.

The seafood moiled in coconut was so creamy and delicious, nothing like i’ve ever tasted before. I mopped it all up with the naan bread. This dish is typical from Southern India so i felt really cultured trying something from that part of the world.

Then we tucked into the rich Gosh Nawabi dish, which included tender pieces of lamb served in a thick tomatoey sauce.

It was plentiful and just enough for two to share with a portion of their tasty rice.

Somehow, I managed to have enough room for a pudding and I’m glad I did.

I tucked into the light mango cheesecake which was delicious and creamy, almost whipped in texture. The biscuit crumb on the bottom gave it a nice texture too.

Overall, it was a lovely experience and one I will certainly remember. I would definitely return again.
