The MP for Wokingham has called on the Government to drill for gas in the North Sea amid tensions with Russia.

Boris Johnson and other world leaders could hit Russia with economic sanctions should they invade Ukraine.

Such sanctions could provoke Russia to 'weaponise' its supply of gas to Europe, which sources half of its supply from Russia – though the UK only sources five per cent.

On Monday, MP John Redwood tweeted: “Russia's control over the EU gas supply is a bad weakness for the West in the current dispute. Why doesn't the U.K. government get on with getting more of our gas out of the U.K. North Sea?"

He wrote: “Another cold day with little wind. Windpower is generating just 3 per cent of our electricity, coal back on at 5 per cent and plenty of imports. When will the government put in enough reliable capacity for our needs?”

While some followers agreed with the MP, others were quick to criticise the suggestion.

“Perhaps a better solution, Sir John, would be to insulate peoples' homes so that we didn't use as much fuel?” replied one account.

Another wrote “Why don’t you ask your colleagues in government?”

Others were frustrated with Redwood’s complaint due to the Conservative’s being in charge of the nation’s energy plan since 2010.

“All the gas coming out of parliament would probably suffice,” wrote one account.
