Binfield Football Club has paid tribute to one of their young players who tragically lost his life in a traffic accident on his way home from a match.
Christian Rowe died shortly after being involved in a two-car collision in Chobham late last Wednesday (January 19) evening, a week before his 20th birthday.
Rowe had made four appearances for Binfield since signing on dual-registration forms from Slough Town.
He was among the unused substitutes for the club's Berks & Bucks Senior Cup tie against Long Crendon at Oxford.
In a shared statement, Binfield and Slough said his death had left them "devastated and heartbroken." Both called off their league matches that were scheduled for last Saturday.
Swindon Town are among several other clubs to send their condolences to his family and friends as he was once at their Academy and captained the side in 2017.
Carl Withers, who manages the Binfield team along with player Jamie McClurg, said: "We understand he was about two minutes away from arriving home when involved in a head-on collision.
"It has been a very tough week for all of us at the club and no doubt at Slough as well.
"He was a lovely, lovely lad always with a smile on his face. He had only been with us for a short time but had become quite a big part of our squad. We are certainly going to miss him.
"Apparently this Wednesday (January 26) would have been his 20th birthday, which makes it even sadder for his family."
Binfield has decided to go ahead with their league match at Guernsey today (Wednesday) and Mr Withers said he will be very much in their memory when they fly out.
"Our players want to produce a performance that will make Christian proud but they will not be under any pressure."
Binfield plays Ashford Town at their home ground in Hill Farm Lane his coming Saturday and a two-minute silence is planned, while a collection will also be made for the Rowe family.
"It is going to be quite a sombre day," added Mr Withers, who added: "We will get one of his (playing) shirts framed and put up in the clubhouse, so we will always remember him."
Two occupants of the other car involved in the accident, which occurred at around 11pm, were also injured and Surrey Police are appealing for witnesses.
