For Bracknell Nostalgia this week, we are going back to 1994 to see what was going on in Bracknell and the surrounding areas.

One of the many light-hearted stories from the time was the then East Berkshire MP Andrew MacKay visiting Ascot in what was a whistle-stop tour of the town.

It was a busy day for Mr MacKay, as he opened an office for the software specialists company, Birch Technology Ltd at Unit E, Silwood Park, Buckhurst Road.

Later that same day, he attended a fundraising event in Sunningdale before going to a political supper at Ascot Heath Junior School.

One of the interesting stories from the time was Wildridings Primary School revealed to the News 27 years ago that several pupils were from different countries.

Students, as well as coming from all four corners of the UK, hailed from nations such as Australia, the UAE, Zimbabwe, the USA, Canada, Hungary, Spain Ecuador and Pakistan.

The school kids were children of officers who were stationed at Bracknell’s RAF Staff College.

A teacher from the school said at the time: “It is very useful, especially to have pupils in the school from other countries.”

Some of pupils left the school in December of that year, due to the completion of their parent’s training at the college.

A story that will make you smile from ’94 focuses on one of the town’s salons, New Concept.

The fourth year of the decade marked the business’ fifth anniversary and to celebrate the occasion, they gave their first-ever customer a makeover she wouldn’t forget.

Margret Hackett, who was a regular following its opening in 1989, was given a ‘top-to-toe’ makeover on the house.

She was also given a bouquet of flowers.

Manager, Niki Griffin, said: “We thought we would mark this special anniversary by saying ‘thank you’ to our first client in a special way.”

That same year, Bracknell Forest Borough’s then mayor, Isabel Mattick, presented council worker, Chris Raynor, a certificate in recognition for her work in one of the borough’s sheltered schemes for elderly tenants.

Round a bout the same time, schoolchildren at College Town Infant School made an appearance on BBC Radio 5.

The reception students went onto the show as a result of the new orders for religious education brought in by the Government, and the recordings made it onto their Education Matters Spotlight feature.

Then headteacher, June Durrant, said: “The reception lass have only been here a couple of weeks and they have already been on the radio.

“They acted out a baptism scene as part of the topics we are teaching at the moment.

“It was a great success with many parents ringing in to say how good the programme was.”

Sticking with schools, 1994 was the same year that the Warfield School officially opened in the area, students at St Michael’s Church of England School took part in an egg painting competition, and the Brackenhale School took part in the ‘Go’ championship, which saw students from the school partake in playing the 4,000-year-old board game.

Finally, Wokingham resident Elise Clark received a card from the queen as Mrs Clark celebrated her 100th birthday at the town’s Lovat House Care Home.
