Organiser of the scheme, Mrs Sandra Mowbray, said: “The aim is to break up the holidays for the parents who and limited to where they can take the children.

“The playgroup takes the strain off them.”

Some of the activities that the children enjoyed included playing football and visiting Bognor beach.

That summer also saw a Binfield man achieve something unique.

Gardner David Harmsworth, 67, had a cactus bloom three times in six months.

He said: “We got it five years ago and it’s never come out like this before – not even with the long summer had last year.

“We don’t feed it anything special, but we’ve asked our gardening friends and they say they’ve never come across anything like it.

“The funny thing is – we don’t even know what sort of cactus it is.”

At around about the same time, the summer of 1977 saw many people from the area and beyond visit Berkshire to enjoy a nostalgia motorbike meet up.
