HUNDREDS of runners tied their laces together to compete in the annual Bracknell half marathon on Sunday.

More than 600 people ran the 13 mile course on Sunday, September 5, organised by Bracknell Forest Council and Everyone Active, starting at The Lexicon, heading off around the borough and finishing at the iconic town centre finishing line.

The race, now in its 36th year, welcomed runners of all abilities with each finisher receiving a commemorative medal and t-shirt.

Winning male runner Richard King completed the 13-mile stretch in just 1 hour 16 minutes while Claire Welch finished first for the women in just 1 hour 36 minutes.

This year, The Lexicon Bracknell Half Marathon organisers demonstrated a commitment to reducing plastic by using the innovative OOHO water capsules instead of bottled water.

The seaweed-based capsules are completely edible, with runners biting in, consuming the water and discarding the capsule lining with the knowledge it will completely biodegrade in less than six weeks. OOHO capsules generate 96 per cent less carbon emissions than PET plastic for the equivalent container volume.

Cllr Marc Brunel-Walker, executive member for economic development and regeneration, said: “It is fantastic to see events again in the town centre. The Lexicon Bracknell Half Marathon starts and finishes in the heart of the town giving a real sense of excitement. Well done to everyone who took part.

“Despite the ongoing challenges of COVID, looking for ways to reduce the environmental impact of the race has been a priority this year and we welcome the reduction of plastic.

“Finally, a huge thank you must go to the volunteers who give up their time to ensure the race can run. They make the race magic happen!”

Ben Polhill, development manager at Everyone Active Sport, said: “We’re delighted to be working alongside Bracknell Forest Council to host this fantastic event.

“It’s a great course, and an opportunity for people to lace up their trainers and enjoy the positive atmosphere the race always creates after what’s been a difficult 18 months.”

Rob Morris, general manager at The Lexicon said: “Congratulations to all those who took part in The Lexicon Bracknell Half Marathon.

"We were delighted to play host to the many supporters cheering on runners as they set off from Bond Square and then crossed the finish line in Braccan Walk. I’m happy to announce that Team Lexicon, fundraising on behalf of The Lexicon Charity Fund and One Great Day, also raised more than £3,000 to support charitable causes!”
