A MAN has been charged with a string of offences after pictures of young women were allegedly taken at Royal Holloway University and uploaded to social media.

Thomas Cramer is accused of photographing students without their knowledge or consent and posting them on Instagram, along with a string of insulting captions.

The 29-year-old was first arrested on Sunday after staff and students at the university in Egham, Surrey, spotted a man taking images.

He was arrested again on Tuesday, June 1, after allegedly setting up a new Instagram account and carrying on using insulting and threatening language in his posts, police said.

On Wednesday, Cramer, from Ascot, was charged with harassment, racially aggravated public order and possession of cannabis, as well as two driving offences, including driving without a licence and driving with no insurance.

Some of the pictures posted online had derogatory or insulting captions written underneath and the Instagram account also threatened those who then commented on the posts, police said.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend, officers received a large number of online reports of similar pictures appearing online.

After the incident, some women said they felt unsafe walking around campus.

A spokesman for Surrey Police said: "We received a number of calls over the weekend from staff and students at Royal Holloway University who reported that they had been photographed without their knowledge or consent.

"The images had then been uploaded to Instagram, some of which were accompanied by derogatory comments."

Cramer was remanded to appear at Guildford Magistrates' Court today.
