MORE than 40 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Berkshire in the past 24 hours.

Public Health England has recorded 44 new lab-confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, in areas including Reading, Bracknell, Wokingham, West Berkshire, Slough and Windsor and Maidenhead.

These figures are correct as of Sunday, May 30, 2021. It brings the total number of cases in Berkshire to 57,713.

The local breakdown for the past 24 hours as follows:

  • Reading - 20 cases, 11,191 total
  • Bracknell Forest - 13 cases, 7,178 total
  • Wokingham - 9 cases, 8,424 total
  • West Berkshire - 0 cases, 6,562 total
  • Slough - 10 cases, 15,775 total
  • Windsor and Maidenhead - 2 cases, 8,593 total

There have now been 4,484,056 people across the UK who have tested positive for the virus - a daily increase of 3,240.

The latest seven-day rate per 100,000 people locally are as follows:

  • Reading - 56.2
  • Bracknell Forest - 14.7
  • Wokingham - 31.6
  • West Berkshire - 30.3
  • Slough - 49.5
  • Windsor and Maidenhead - 15.8

The UK’s vaccination programme is offering a “false sense of security” amid a mounting third wave of infections, according to Government advisers who have called for next month’s unlocking to be delayed.

Professor Ravi Gupta, a member of the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group (Nervtag), said that with the UK in the grip of an “early” third wave of Covid-19 infections, ministers should consider pushing back their target of scrapping all Covid measures on June 21 “by a few weeks”.

The University of Cambridge academic said there had been an “exponential growth” in the number of cases, fuelled by the more transmissible Indian variant, but that the “explosive” impact it could have was currently being masked by the high vaccination rate.
