A NURSERY school in Ascot has had to close, after the racecourse refused to renew their lease.

Ascot Nursery School, which was first opened in 1972, was officially closed on Thursday, December 17, causing upset across the community.

Prior to the school's official closure, councillors and residents appealed to the Ascot Racecourse in a bid to convince them to remain open, however it was decided the site was needed for the race course's own use, and therefore the lease was not renewed.

Pat Evitt, former owner of Ascot Nursery School, said: "I am absolutely devastated that the nursery is having to close.

"I've had the nursery for over 35 years and I can honestly say I've enjoyed every moment - I believe the early years are such an important time for a child's development, building a foundation of life skills.

"We have always been a traditional nursery, teaching good manners, respect for each other and for things, and preparing children for school.

"I've never looked on the work I do as a job because I love it so much - it is my life, and it's been more of a hobby really.

"I've had the pleasure and privilege of meeting some amazing families over the 35 years.

"I have been so fortunate for having such wonderful staff who have been with me many years, in particular my deputy Jean Cottey, whose been with me 29 years, and long service staff with a wealth of experience I feel has been a great asset to the nursery - we have been like a little family.

"Ascot racecourse have always been brilliant landlords and we have enjoyed an excellent relationship for many many years, but I never expected or imagined they would do this to me now so close to the 50 years [since the nursery first opened], but they have been good - I can't fault them."

A spokesman for Ascot Racecourse confirmed that the school's lease had expired and had not been renewed, however did not provide any further comment.
