A TALENTED student has created a flag for Bracknell Forest in tribute to the borough’s “unique identity”.

Louis Martin, who is from Bracknell and who studied at Ranelagh School, designed the flag as a way to remember his hometown before he headed to Aberystwyth University in September.

The flag features a badger, a log, leaves and a number of hidden meanings.

Louis explained: “I live in Bracknell and grew up there most of my life.

“Before I headed off to uni I wanted to show a little something for back home before I left.

“I felt that should be explored in its own flag. Something that fits Bracknell's vibe as well as the style of New Town that it is. Something that stands out among other UK town flags.

“The inspiration is actually based on the Californian flag.

“The Text is taken in inspiration from the Bracknell Town Council logo flag.

“The leaves at the corner represent Bracknell's six parishes and are at the corner to represent Bracknell's name meaning nook or corner.

“The black line represents Bracknell's pitch black sky at night, while the green the abundance of nature that exists inside the town.”

Louis spoke to the News after posting the image of his flag in a vexillology Reddit group — or in other words, a space for those who enjoy flags, the history behind them, and their design characteristics.

The student explained why he decided to share his design.

He said: “The flag community is growing, it's a way to express a little bit of pride in wherever you’re from, or whatever you care about.

“It’s a small form of art that is mathematical, creative genuine and is ever-growing.”
