RESIDENTS have been warned following reports of doorstep scams operating in Wokingham.

The Public Protection Partnership made the announcement earlier this week (November 24), detailing how scammers posing as workmen are intimidating and scamming elderly Wokingham residents for cash.

A spokesman for the Public Protection Partnership said: "We've received reports today of a scam operating in the Wokingham area.

"'Workmen' saying they're from council/highways agency approaching elderly residents at their home offering to sell them some gravel they had left over from a job.

"Gravel is then dumped on their drive and they're asked to pay an inflated rate (in the reported case £7000) for the gravel.

"With 'workmen' becoming increasing threatening when resident refuses to pay.

"As a reminder, never agree to work being carried out on your home/garden from an unsolicited knock at the door.

"Always report scams of this nature to Citizens Advice (see details below), If the scammers are still on your property, or near, and you feel threatened in anyway then call 999 immediately."
