A daughter is asking drivers to be mindful of cyclists after her dad suffers being sworn at on a daily basis.

Kassandra Alicia Hopkins from Bracknell is raising awareness of her dad's charity ride, but she's not asking for donations.

Instead, she is asking residents who see him cycling on the roads to be "kind and patient".

She said: "I do genuinely worry about my dad cycling especially when he comes home and tells us that he has been verbally abused, cut up, and has even been told before that they hope he gets hit. The abuse is very extensive and to use to language used, I think my mum would kill me!

"Everyone launched a massive #bekind campaign, and I want them to think about cyclists as well. My dads mental health has been improved by cycling, and wanting to do the Lejog cycle next year for Alzheimer’s research, but it’s incredibly disheartening when he comes back with such negative stories."

Phil started his training for the Lejoj 2021 cycle on August 2. The challenge starts from Lands End – the most westerly point of England to John O'Groats – the far north of Scotland.

Cycling for more than five years, Phil has covered over 20,000 miles in that time.

The Lejoj 2021 challenge takes approximately five days to complete, covering 1,250 miles and on top of that, Phil will be cycling from his home in Bracknell to the starting point in Cornwall with a 20kg weight on top of that.

He said: "The amount of close passes and unnecessary overtakes has really been highlighted. Do you really need to overtake me at the last minute, just to slow down and turn left ? Or squeeze past me as we are slowing down for a red light?

"The most amazing thing is how putting that sign on the back of the trailer has changed peoples attitudes instantly. Now it’s all smiles and waves. It’s hard to put a number on abuse. Since my daughter made my sign I’ve had over 100 miles of nice drivers and good feedback. Other than Friday when a idiot nearly knocked my handlebar with his mirror while exiting a roundabout as he wanted to be in front."

His daughter concluded: "If you see him, please be kind. Please take into account training takes time, takes dedication. It can be a bit soul destroying to be screamed at when you want to do something massive like this, especially for charity."
