Residents in Bracknell will be painting the town red to mark the end of the First World War.

This November marks 100 years since the Great War ended in 1918, and residents will be marking the occasion by counting how many poppies they can see around the borough.

Fibre glass poppy decorations were originally purchased as part of the borough’s World War I centenary celebrations in 2014 and have been popular ever since, says the council.

Councillor Ash Merry, Mayor of Bracknell Forest, said: “We are delighted to welcome back the giant poppies which are a unique way our borough commemorates Remembrance Day.

“While Remembrance Day and other remembrance celebrations may be a bit different this year, I hope that residents enjoy seeing these poppies around the borough again and that they serve as a poignant reminder.”

Bracknell Forest Council are encouraging residents to take a photo of the poppy and post it to social media to spread awareness of Remembrance Day.

Even though there will be no official Remembrance Day parade in Bracknell this year, you can also get involved by placing poppy posters in their windows, knitting poppies or even build a life-size soldier!

Councillor Gill Birch, Chair of the Community Events Working Group said: "Sadly there will be no official parades or services taking place this year. Bracknell Town Council is working closely with the Holy Trinity Church and the Royal British Legion to mark this important event safely”

Instead, Bracknell Town Council will be sharing a virtual Remembrance event which will include the laying of wreaths at The Bracknell War Memorial with other dignitaries and a short service at Holy Trinity Church.

This will be broadcast on Sunday 8th November on social media @BracknellTownCouncil whilst the Deputy Town Mayor, Councillor Sanjeev Prasad, will lay a wreath at the Church of St Michael and St Mary Magdalene in Easthampstead.
