"So angry, but not surprised" - this is how one Labour councillor in Bracknell has reacted to Tories voting against free school meals.

Conservative MPs rejected a Labour motion to extend free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021 by 322 votes to 261, majority 61.

It comes after Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford warned MPs not to "turn a blind eye" to vulnerable families as the Commons prepared to vote on a Labour call to extend free school meals over the holidays.

The footballer was made an MBE for his efforts earlier this year and has urged his 3.4 million Twitter followers to lobby MPs to back his campaign.

He said: "Paying close attention to the Commons today and to those who are willing to turn a blind eye to the needs of our most vulnerable children, 2.2 million of them who currently qualify for free school meals."

Many Labour councillors have reacted angrily to the way the Tory government have voted, including Cllr for Great Hollands North Mary Temperton.

She said: "Not surprised at all. I tweeted that I expected him to vote against this support for our most vulnerable children. Many of our families live on a knife edge regarding balancing their weekly budgets. "During school time, their children are fed with free school meals, and often support from teachers.

"During holiday times, this support ceases, but no extra money comes into the family. Maybe our MP thinks being hungry is character building.

"We can afford to do this. It is just not a conservative priority. It is not part of their ideology. Families this affects rarely shout about their lot, or cause a fuss, so they do not matter.

"No money for care workers. No money for nurses. No money to extend free school meals to ensure all our children are fed during the holidays. Plenty of money for their mates. So angry, but not surprised."
