This week's column from leader of Bracknell Forest Council, Paul Bettison

Across the country, cases of COVID-19 are rising. This is reflected in Bracknell Forest with a steady increase in cases. Even though the rise was predicted, it can be difficult to mentally prepare yourself for the winter ahead.

Our Local Outbreak Engagement Board (LOEB) is one of the tools that the council has in place to manage the pandemic. It is held as a virtual meeting that is open to the public every month and more often if needed, led by local councillors. They consider the latest figures and look at what the council can do to prevent cases locally, whilst protecting the livelihood of residents by keeping as many businesses open as possible. It’s a juggling act that won’t work without your help.

We will continue to communicate with residents by:

· keeping our website up to date with the latest information and guidance

· using social media to spread the word

· working with services, businesses and organisations to make sure information is clear and accurate

· making sure information is available in accessible formats and languages other than English

Additionally, we are looking for Community Information Champions to help spread these messages. They will be a vital role over the coming months in our borough. We will simply send you the latest updates and ask that you share the information with your friends, families and colleagues. More information will be released this week, so keep an eye on our website.

At a recent LOEB meeting, it was identified that Bracknell train station was an area to target. On Saturday, Cllr Marc Brunel-Walker and members of the Bracknell Forest Youth Council met to give out some packs to young people. The packs contained a face covering, hand sanitiser and a leaflet and gave us the chance to chat to young people about how they can help protect their families and friends.

Finally, as we move towards winter, please look after your mental health. Check in with family and friends and be kind to yourself. I am very proud of the community spirit that the borough has shown so far in the pandemic. Let’s look after each other. Stay safe and well.
