This week's column from Bracknell Forest Council leader Paul Bettison

Life has changed greatly over the past six months and the Prime Minister’s latest briefing on the tighter restrictions coming into force in parts of the country is a stark reminder that we cannot afford to be complacent, or we risk further changes here in Bracknell Forest.

As you may have seen from the council’s news channels, there has been a rise of COVID-19 cases around Slough, South Buckinghamshire, Maidenhead, Spelthorne and Runnymede. The increase is now affecting a broader range of ages throughout those communities and, while Bracknell Forest rates remain low in comparison, it’s important to remember that the virus doesn’t stop at the borough boundary. We all need to continue to do our bit to protect ourselves, family and the borough.

To do this we must all:

· Stick to socialising in groups of six people or less

· Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth

· Wash your hands often

· Keep your distance

· Check your symptoms, isolate and get tested if you develop symptoms

· Pull together – this is really important as we are all in this together and it’s something I’m proud to say we’re very good at in Bracknell Forest, so let’s continue protecting one another.

Unfortunately, the virus is also impacting work opportunities and Bracknell Forest is not immune to this either, but help is available.

Our community learning team has worked hard to continue to offer a range of courses for adults, helping people learn, develop and practise new skills for work, wellbeing and to support their family.

Amongst its offer to support people into employment are qualifications in food safety, first aid, health and safety, customer service and English and maths, along with the opportunity to gain free job-seeking advice through its job club. Working with schools, there are also courses available to help parents.

Additional safety measures mean some classes take place at the Open Learning Centre, whilst others are online. Phone and email support are also provided. To find out more visit: www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/community-learning or call 01344 354220.

Until next week, please take care of yourself and others around you and remember, we’re all in this together.
