A BUSY road in Wokingham is finally going to reopen both of its two lanes, after one lane was closed to aid social distancing measures.

Rectory Road in Wokingham had one of its lanes temporarily closed by the Wokingham Borough Council (WBC), in order to give pedestrians more room to make social distancing easier.

WBC also claims that the barriers were also introduced to help prevent speeding in the borough during lockdown.

WBC announced on Friday, September 4 that the barricade will be removed and the road returned to normal by Monday, September 7.

Cllr Pauline Jorgensen, executive member for highways and transport, said: “The barriers were originally installed to create more space for pedestrians to walk into town safely and as part of the wider measures to help reduce traffic speeds across the town centre.

“Over the last few months we have continued to monitor usage and believe now is the right time to remove the barriers on Rectory Road.

"With more people returning to the office, and schools reopened, we are keen to return the road to two lane traffic to provide additional capacity.

"The remaining town centre restrictions continue to remain under review and will be removed at the appropriate times."

Work to remove the barriers will take place on Sunday evening from around 6pm. Traffic access will be maintained during the works, which will see the road return to normal.
