Bracknell residents have reacted to the decision to halve the new trial fee to use the play-area at The Look Out.

The reduction came after growing pressure from the community in the days since the new trial charge was announced

Bracknell Forest Council revealed it would reduce the entry cost from £10 to £5 in light of scores of complaints from residents.

It also announced disabled children can use the playground free of charge.

One group to voice their opposition to the trial was First Days Children's Charity, which accused the council of 'social cleansing' after they claimed the charge would exclude youngsters from poorer families who cannot afford the entry cost.

Emma Cantrell, CEO of First Days, reacted to the reduction.

She told the News: "Whilst we welcome the news that the council has halved the fee to use the play area, there will be some families who still cannot afford this amount.

"The principle remains that council-owned parks should be free for all children, regardless of their family’s income.

"We are glad that the council has recognised their error in excluding disabled children from a much-needed facility and reversed their decision to charge these families, we would like the council to now extend this free access to all children from families in receipt of low-income benefits to ensure that all children are treated equally in Bracknell Forest.”

After the new charge was announced late last week, residents labelled the idea as a "money-making exercise", "ridiculous" and "absolutely horrendous."

On Monday, Gillian Anne Rose told the News she thought it "contradictory to the government drive to improve the physical and mental well-being of children to then charge for a play park."

Reacting to the reduced fees, Gillian said: "It's great to see the council effectively admit they got it wrong, but they need to listen to the residents of Bracknell and children's charities and abolish the fees completely.

"There is still a charge for children to use the playpark facilities and this is a worrying trend from the council that they need to reconsider."

Several other readers have reacted to the reduction on Bracknell News Facebook page.

Sharing the post, Kurt Thomas Frame wrote: "That’s still ridiculous [—]who would pay just to use the bloody park[?]"

Reacting on We Love Crowthorne Village Facebook page, Cheryl Gibbs said: "There should be no charge to use the park and no charge to park your car either."

However, Jennifer Leigh Myers said: "I can’t see the problem if the money goes into the site to keep it clean and improve the facilities available here.

"There still are plenty of free parks. The one at pinewood, for example, is amazing and totally free to use."
