BOMBS from the Second World War were detonated in Great Hollands yesterday, after they were found in a resident's garage.

The bombs, technically British mortar tips from the Second World War, were discovered and taken home by the resident in Holbeck, Great Hollands, Bracknell, after finding them with a metal detector on the beach.

Following this, Thames Valley Police officers were called to the address for the three 'unidentified objects'.

While the objects were being idenitifed and assessed, police cordoned off the area.

Once the mortar tips were identified, the British Army Bomb Disposal attended the scene, safely disposing of the explosives in Easthampstead Park yesterday evening.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "You might have seen a bit of a commotion in Great Holland’s, and then heard a loud bang coming from Easthampstead Park. That was us!

"Earlier this afternoon Officers responded to concerns around three unidentified objects in a garage in Holbeck.

"Cordons were put in place to protect the public until the items were identified and assessed.

"The items were identified as three British Army WW2 Mortar tips that had been discovered and brought back to the address by a resident, after metal detecting on a beach on the South Coast.

"In future we advise to just leave them where they are and call us!

"British Army Bomb Disposal attended to assist with the safe disposal of the items.

"Our thanks go to Easthampstead Park for allowing us to use their grounds for the controlled detonation.....and PC Johnson got chased by a cow!"

The police cordon was lifted at 8.10pm last night.
